Good news stories which remove the sting of loss.

I found two heart-lifting stories on the news which came from the opposite side of the world. Sometimes, adversity brings out the best in members of society.

We all need to hear about something good happening elsewhere when our own lives are taking a downward turn. Some people are in debt or maybe facing abuse. They could be quarreling with their spouse or alone and friendless, feeling ill or just plain fed up. Let me share a brief outline of the stories that cheered me this morning.

In Ireland: A dying Irish girl’s last dream came true when her favorite pop star sang to her over the phone. The 15 year old from Dublin, lost her battle with cystic fibrosis minutes after singer Ed Sheeran sang her a song she loved - Little Bird.

One of her friends wrote on Facebook: ‘It is with great sadness that I have to share with you all today – our beautiful angel was taken from us.'

There had been a widespread Twitter campaign with the hashtag #SongForTri after her friends wrote online about Triona’s last wish. Listen to Little Bird with lyrics on You Tube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdOF_qYWx-s (You need to skip the ads.)

I can imagine the wonder and joy as Triona listened spell-bound to the singer who made this special effort for her.

In Australia: When both parents died one after the other, 3 brothers (19, 16 & 14 years old) faced being separated into foster homes and losing their mortgaged home. A television program broadcast their plight, hoping to raise some money for their education costs. However, what happened amazed the organizers. Thousands of donations have poured into the brothers' bank account from Australians, rich big businesses and normal people including pensioners and children. This morning an emotional 19 year-old Jarrod Lawrence, who will take responsibility for his brothers, told Daily Mail Australia he and his brothers had so far received an astonishing $750,000. The school has waived costs for the boys as well.

It's great to know that adversity brings out the best in people.

We should demand more good news stories. So may people seem to immerse themselves in gossip and crime articles. It's up to us. Don't read what you don't like.

Good morning Francine,

I LOVE both stories. The first one is bittersweet but how joyful she must have passed on. The second story gave me goosebumps. The kindness of strangers have helped a family stay together. Love that!

I think the young Irish girl must have died happy. And strangers always band together to give aid when it's needed. Brings the best out in humanity.

Several months ago, here in the United States, we had the saga of Batkid, a 5 year old with cancer whose wish was to be the superhero Batman for a day. His wish was granted in the most spectacular way. Tomorrow is going to be another sad day in the community where I live as we commemorate a horrible event that took place on April 3, 2009. It is good to read stories that help keep your faith in humanity. Thank you.

Yes. Our faith in humanity is rightly bolstered when we hear about people doing good for others with no expectation of a return.
