Man is born and he dies—nothing's surer. But are we meant to suffer? Cancer is the word we all dread to hear.

Death rates for lung, breast, bowel and prostate cancer combined have fallen by 25% in Scotland over the past 20 years, according to Cancer Research UK. Read full BBC article.

Improvements in treatment, including surgery, hormone therapy, and radiotherapy as well as earlier diagnosis, are thought to have contributed to the trend of reduced prostate cancer death rates.

However, mortality rates in liver, pancreatic, melanoma, oral and some digestive cancers have all increased.

According to a shocking study covering millions of people in dozens of countries, cancer patients in Britain have a far worse chance of surviving than those in any other country in the developed world. The Datamonitor report used information on 33 countries held by the World Health Organisation, the United Nations, International Association of Cancer Registries and other organisations. Read more here.

In the USA in 2014, there will be an estimated 1,665,540 new cancer cases diagnosed and 585,720 cancer deaths in the US. Cancer remains the second most common cause of death in the US, accounting for nearly 1 of every 4 deaths. And not only that. Global cancer death rates are more than 50% higher in men than women.

But, there is something more to life, isn't there? We're people, with hearts, souls and minds.

Lyrics to Alfie: www.lyricsdepot.com

What's it all about, Alfie?

Is it just for the moment we live?

What's it all about when you sort it out, Alfie?

Are we meant to take more than we give

or are we meant to be kind?

And if only fools are kind, Alfie,

then I guess it's wise to be cruel.

And if life belongs only to the strong, Alfie,

what will you lend on an old golden rule?

As sure as I believe there's a heaven above, Alfie,

I know there's something much more,

something even non-believers can believe in.

I believe in love, Alfie.

Without true love we just exist, Alfie.

Until you find the love you've missed you're nothing, Alfie.

When you walk let your heart lead the way

and you'll find love any day, Alfie, Alfie.

I believe in love too. My husband is undergoing tests at the moment to see how far his cancer has spread. Every morning during my meditation over the last few years, my final affirmation is 'Let me support my husband as long as we're together'. Love will allow us to face whatever comes with dignity.

Here's a link to uplifting thoughts about cancer: http://thepreachersword.com/2012/03/10/what-cancer-cannot-do/

We are not meant to live forever. Yet, I like to think our spirit lives on.
So many people are facing this dreadful disease nowadays, especially as the population ages. Know that you're not alone.

I'm sorry to hear about your husband's illness. I hope he recovers and is already on the road to recovery. I believe we have a soul and that part of us lives forever. Yes, we do all have to die at some point, well our physical bodies get worn out or sick, but that doesn't make it any easier. I have lost several friends and family members to cancer, but equally I also have friends and family who have survived and lived to tell the tale. I wish you and your husband much love and happiness, and the inner strength to deal with whatever life throws up. Blessings.

Francene, my best friend of 51 years has been battling her second cancer for almost three years now. Over a year ago, her husband joined her in battling his own cancer. They have been married over 40 years. She sat through his radiation treatment and he sits through her chemo. She wears funny wigs to chemo and he posts pictures of her sometimes on Facebook. What does that have to do with your situation? Not much except that I hope you find much hope, much support and much strength in the coming months, just as they have. I appreciate you sharing this very personal news with your readers.
