Privileges can raise expectations and lower decency.

According to the BBC  a study of the teeth and bones of Richard III reveal the king drank up to a bottle of wine a day in the last years of his life and his diet included exotic meat including swan, crane, heron and egret, far richer than other high-ranking people of the time.

The research by the British Geological Survey and University of Leicester took bone samples after his remains were unearthed in Leicester in 2012. His grave was lost when the surrounding church was demolished, and rediscovered under a car park. The present Queen Elizabeth 11 was shocked about her 14th great-grand uncle being found in such piteous circumstances.

Born in 1452, Richard III reigned from 1483 until he was killed at the Battle of Bosworth in August 1485, the last English king to die in battle after one of the shortest reigns in British history. 26 months. His appearance has been determined by DNA tests.

Bone analysis showed his drinking habits changed significantly around the time he became king in 1483.

We could equate this behavior to modern stars and celebrities. Not that they necessarily indulge in more alcohol, although one of England's beloved football stars is continually in and out of rehab, but overindulgence seems to go hand in hand with celebrity status. Nowadays, this takes the form of drugs, lavish spending, and sexual permissiveness, which carries the person way beyond normal conduct.

King Richard 111 is often shown as a cripple with a hunch back and enormous spine curvature.

However, a television documentary used a body double to prove Richard's curved spine would not have stopped him fighting in battle. A man whose spine has a similar 75 degree curve showed he was capable of wearing armor and riding a warhorse. Also, the rigid construction and stiff back support of a medieval saddle would have helped Richard to remain upright on horseback.

A re-interment service for the king will take place at Leicester Cathedral on 26 March next year following a week of events in the area.

Do we all have this potential for overindulgence within ourselves? Does wealth bring out our greed? Our selfish desires? Maybe status swells our self-importance. I'm better than you, therefore I'll 'lord it over you'.

And the final question: what makes one person better than another? One of Christianity's greatest examples, Jesus, is recorded as saying, And the greatest among you shall be your servant. Jesus didn't raise himself above others, eat special food, live a different life-style. He acted in the same way as his adoring public, whilst teaching them. No matter what your religion, every example of a good man is shown as humble.

How would you live if you suddenly became a celebrity?

I think it's such a shame that celebrities feel the need to indulge themselves in alcohol, drugs and other things. I've been following the Richard 3rd discoveries and programmes and have found them really interesting. I find it amazing how a King in the 1400's can overindulge in alcohol, and a superstar in modern day such as Michael Jackson/Amy Winehouse can also overindulge in alcohol/drugs. It must be a human flaw that has lasted over generations - riches, fame and fortune bring along greed and dependency.
Great post!

Hmm yes. Just look at all the celebrities, a large percentage of them probably take drugs because they have easy access to them!

I think a lot of the showing off and over indulging is accidental. When your life has such a dramatic change for you to become famous I imagine you cope how you can, you're proud of yourself, you do treat yourself. I like to think its not necessarily self importance as much as not thinking far enough to see the image of themselves they're presenting.

Personally, I think intent, action and priorities make one person better than another :)

What a wonderful novel blog! Be assured that I'm coming back here, Francene!
As a teacher, I found that history needed to be brought "alive", and this is as good as I've come across. So much factual information can be squeezed in among fiction, and the result is... interest & education! Bravo!

Fascinating information! I do think that money and celebrity has the power to corrupt, particularly if an individual has a tendency to excess anyway. Lots of food for thought here - thank you for sharing.

Another thought provoking post, Francene. I think that once you are a king or a celebrity, it's like laws and rules don't apply to you. You, after all, are special. But you also have me wondering how bone testing can determine that someone ate swan and heron. Do you really become what you eat?

Interesting about the diet thing. I know that historically a lot of the more exotic things of that ilk were eaten by the royalty so that fits, but how do they tell such things by analysis of bone fragments? I am curious if the source gave any indication of that?

I often wonder why celebrities are so highly paid and the nobler professions like nurses and teachers not so. We live in a topsy turvy world.
