Is the world speeding toward the end?

Right now, two separate problems are pointing to predictions of the apocalypse. I don't know about you, but this worries me. Not that I could do anything about either situation.

Firstly, the Ebola contagion is rapidly spreading over the world with accounts of 3,800 deaths so far. According to newspapers reports, the disease is entrenched in West Africa and might spread in the air we breathe.

The other worry is the ISIS threat. Rumors have spread that ISIS is making decisions in Syria based on the ancient Islamic prophecy of the end of time. Apparently, recruits feel they are taking part in destiny and flock to the hotspot from all around the globe.

When both of these subjects approach at the same time, it makes me wonder if such a thing could really occur. There have been many predictions about the end of the world, the most recent being 2012 from Nostradamus. None of them—of course—have happened.

You and I can do nothing about either of them.

So, what's life all about? Should live as best we can despite what's happening in the rest of the world?

Life isn't fair. Some of us are lucky enough to be born in a free country where society looks after our welfare. I wouldn't be here now without hospital treatment, and chances are, you wouldn't either. And yet, in countries around the globe, people are caught up in war or pestilence and die by their thousands.

All I can do is pray for them, ask the Creator of us all to grant them some comfort when their loved-ones are snatched away. Underneath, we are all people, living according to concepts we believe to be right or just.

What do you think? Is the end of the world nigh?

The Ebola is definitely quite scary, but I think if we survived smallpox and the plague, we can survive this. I try not to worry to much about f the world ends, because once it's ended it doesn't matter. I think what's worse is people living in terrible conditions, which I'm lucky enough not to but it doesn't mean people out there aren't!

You're right in saying that we can't do anything about it, but it doesn't take away the fear. Dan Brown's most recent book (the name escapes me) covered some of this on the health side, and brought up the fact that we go through nature's attempt to cull the population every now and then. We've had various plagues and SARS a few years ago. Ebola is another one of those, and some believe that it's actually like this to prevent the world crumbling beneath us all. Not that it makes it any better, but I think I'd prefer to look at it that way than think the world is coming to an end.

To Europeans during the Black Death, or Asians during the reign of the Mongul Khans, it must have seemed like the end of the world. Of course, they didn't have air travel or 24/7 news coverage, either, meaning we are all connected - for good or for bad. Without that connection, Ebola may have remained a regional threat. Now it is here in the States because, as authorities feared, it came here via an airplane passenger.

This is worrisome, but, like you said, we can't do much about it. Except to pray, which is something we should definitely be doing. :)

This is a very scary and worrisome topic but we must know that whatever happens is in the Divine's hands and all we can do as a collective is pray, support one another, offer love and yes let go.

These are things to be concerned about, but we should also not lose sight of the good things in life. The end of the world may be today, tomorrow, or even 50 years from now. All that is truly important is for us to live good lives individually.

Yes, I think the end of the world is near; I just don't know how near :). However, I'm not worried because my hope and faith is in Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior and my real home is Heaven with Him. God is sovereign over all and my life is in His hand (the best place to be)! While on earth, I want to make my life count for His glory and make an impact for eternity. We must take the Great Commission seriously. Time is short. Death is not the worst; going to Hell is.

I agree the Ebola situation is scary, but I don't see the point in panicking about it. We have to trust that those in a position to do so will do whatever they can to prevent the further spread. What will be, will be.

As far as IS goes, I think it's hard to know the true situation. We know from past experience that the media cannot be trusted to report these things in an objective way - if they can sensationalise and scaremonger then they will. Let's remember that this a tiny minority of a faith. We didn't predict the end of the world when the IRA were at their most active, nor did we suggest that they represented all Christians.
