Your Christmas tree could make a big cat ecstatic.

In the latest news, a pair of African lions have gone wild in the United Kingdom for Christmas trees after a Cambridgeshire zoo appealed for people to donate them for recycling.

The trees are being reused by Linton Zoological Gardens as big cat toys, bio-fuel and, if they still have roots, to enrich the zoo's enclosures.

The manager said the scented trees are almost like catnip for the resident big cats like lions, tigers and snow leopards. Apparently, they just love the trees, and spend hours playing and rolling around on the pine-scented branches.

Catnip, sometimes known at catmint, is a plant of the mint family and can cause many cats euphoria. Because of their effect on house cats – the volatile oil nepetalactone contained in some Nepeta species binds to the olfactory receptors of cats, typically resulting in temporary euphoria. However, the effect of catmint on humans makes them quarrelsome if ingested.

I've had experience with catnip. I grew several of the plants in my sheltered back courtyard several years ago. A (wild) house cat would visit every day. I'd often find broken fronds lying on the paving. In the end, I found one whole plant uprooted. The scent might have given the animal pleasure, but I decided not to continue growing that particular herb.

The donated trees that are beyond their best are used for the zoo's bio-burner, which provides additional heating and hot water for the zoo—vital in this cold weather. So far, many families have dropped off a single tree and local nurseries have donated unsold stock.

Many years ago, someone must have planted a cute little tree in their back yard in a garden close to us. Now, it's about 50 ft high and blocking off light to the surrounding area. Small gardens are no place for the giants of the pine family. Consider donating your annual tree to a zoo instead. What a great way to recycle the festive tree. I love to imagine big cats playing with the fragrant trees, rolling around and biting the fronds.

Go on. Make an animal happy and do your bit for the environment at the same time.

That is awesome! Who knew? I wish we had some lions to donate ours too. As it is, we're preparing to take it to the recycle tomorrow. :-)

Unfortunately, lions are a rare species now. Thank goodness zoos keep them in a protected environment.

So glad I exposed something you didn't know about. I guess, lions are just big cats and behave in similar ways. I wouldn't want to meet one in the wild though.

LOVE this idea for recycling the trees! Unfortunately we don't have many lions or zoos where I live..LOL. Guess I'll have to do the same old thing and give ours to my son who likes to chop it up for firewood...our own spin on recycling.

What a shame you can't see the big cats playing. Never mind. You are still doing something good for the Earth.

I love this idea. We haven't used a "real" tree in years but when we did, we used to give ours to our town to be chipped and composted. I love the idea of them going to a local zoo - we do have a zoo in nearby Binghamton, New York (one of the oldest zoos in the United States, in fact)-wonder if they would consider having such a program next year. Thank you for giving me an idea for my blog!

This is a fantastic idea! I can imagine those big cats playing with the Christmas trees, rolling around and tossing them in the air, taking a bite or two once in a while. What a wonderful way to say goodbye to your Christmas tree!
