One small step for mankind.

It's not often we hear of a whole nation who believe in putting others before themselves. But that's what the small island nation of Cuba is doing according to a BBC news story today. At the moment, Cuba is providing one of the most impressive responses to the outbreak of Ebola. Rather than giving financial assistance, which it cannot afford, to those West African nations most in need, the Cuban government provides an abundance of skilled healthcare workers passionate about helping Ebola victims.

Cuba has so far provided the largest number of healthcare workers in the fight against Ebola: a total of 256, including doctors, nurses, surgeons and paediatricians. Another 200 trained workers are expected to arrive shortly.

The island nation has a long history of providing universal healthcare, which they believe is a human right, enshrined after the 1976 constitution. During the Cuban revolution, Che Guevara repeatedly encouraged doctors to use their medical skills in the service of others. Pre-existing government commitments define the provision of universal healthcare, and the establishment of a medical education system emphasizing service to others.

Consequently, the country has always been committed to helping nations in need, extending way beyond its borders. At present, more than 50,000 Cuban medical personnel work in over 66 countries.

Apart from providing treatment, Cuba's medical workers search the West African countryside for Ebola victims before guiding them towards clinics with reassurance of good treatment and care. This helps Ebola victims overcome their fears.

The Cuban health workers' unwavering belief in behaving in a selfless manner, treating patients with warmth, dignity, and respect stems from their early medical training. Health care workers believe it is right to sacrifice themselves for the benefit of others.

What a touching story. This gives me some hope for the goodness in mankind. If only all our nations followed the same principle instead of thinking only of how to profit from the suffering of others.

A similar example of help is happening to my husband and I right now. My husband has just been diagnosed with cancer. Our neighbor has taken him to hospital and waited with him during each test lately. His kindness cannot be re-payed.
