Nearly 36 million people worldwide (0.5% of the world's population) live as slaves. Slavery is defined in a more modern context: people subject to forced labour, debt bondage, trafficking, sexual exploitation for money, or being forced into a servile marriage.

The survey by anti-slavery campaign group Walk Free exposes India as enslaving more people overall and Mauritania with the highest percentage.

The group's Global Slavery Index reveals the total is 20% higher than for 2013 because of better methodology. In 2012, the International Labor Organization estimated that almost 21 million people were victims of forced labor. Now, the figure is 36 million.

How little humanity has advanced since the dark days of taking innocent people from their country to live in servitude under a master, beaten, maltreated, and if undervalued, left to die from their treatment.

Can you believe this: Walk Free found evidence of slavery in all 167 countries it surveyed. At the top of the list comes India, where more than 14 million people live as slaves. Next in the index comes China, with more than 3 million slaves, followed by Pakistan, Uzbekistan, and then Russia.

The report calls for much wider international cooperation on slavery. It wants governments to increase penalties for trafficking and to put pressure on businesses to clamp down on the use of slaves in their supply chains.

Do you know how the garment you're wearing now was produced? If it's from India or China, chances are, people were forced to make it. This sobering thought should spur all of us to support our government's drive to put a stop to slavery in every form.

I find these figures quite shocking to be honest, though the interpretations of 'Slavery' differ from country to country which I think essentially causes less of a media outbreak than it should.

I had no idea that there were so many people still in slavery. It's so shocking!

Human Trafficking is still an outrage out there. So sad because it is happening a lot here at my country.

Wow Francene, I had no idea so many people were in slavery. This is shocking and heart-breaking. I wish there was something I could do to end it all :(

Oh my goodness, this is so very sad. We talk so much in history classes about the horrors of slavery, and then it is so easy to forget (or simply not learn) that slavery still exists today. Thank you for the reminder, and call to action.

We have so much work to do. The problem persists because our thinking is the same. One of the reasons slavery existed in America is because people were GREEDY and didn't want to risk not have MORE than what they needed. Today we think the same... we focus only on OUR needs...desires and wants.. without thinking of the greater good and picture. Look at our planet... we are destroying it so OF COURSE we are still destroying one another. We don't even care about the planet how could we care about its inhabitants.

This is heartbreaking, Francene. We do live in a broken world, and unfortunately the weaker and smaller creatures and people are the ones who suffer at the hands of the greedy and selfish. So sad!!
