Do you use life challenges to help you grow?

In today's UK news, a snarling dog bit a chunk out of boy’s face while he tried to stop it attacking his mum and baby brother.

The dog bit the mother's side while she held the baby out of reach. When the crazed animal tried to jump up and bite the eight-month-old baby, the owner warned them not to scream because that would make the slavering animal even wilder.

But Jack yelled to distract it, whereupon the dog dragged him to the ground, leaving the eleven-year-old boy with a four-inch hole in his cheek. He needed plastic surgery and is likely to be scarred for life.

The boy's father rugby-tackled the beast, which had slipped its lead. He eventually trapped it it in a nearby hallway.

The challenge facing each member of the family was to stave off the attack. Only one person found the bravery to take action.

We all face challenges, although they might not be physical.

My present test comes in the form of computer files. I recently changed my PC for a later model. Let me assure you, I'm not PC literate. (The distinguished lady in the picture is not me.)  After a technician swapped my files over, I needed to find the novel I'm working on and continue with the editing. I did that in my own way, by physically dragging (wrong – not physical – I used the mouse) the file out of it's nest and into the new system.

After more than a week, I've discovered I'm working on the wrong file. Over the last few days, I went through the words laboriously and I cut and pasted different sections into it. After worrying over the problem all night, I asked for help during my morning meditation. The answer came: Use the old file and update the recent changes in my writing.

My mental challenge is filled with complication. Dah! Some of the logical files are hidden in my aging brain.

However, I'm using daily set-backs to help me keep hold of the skills remaining in my brain department. If you don't use it: you lose it.

I love to challenge my mind but I'm not always so keen for physical challenges. Happy Good Friday!!

I liked what you said about finding your solution during meditation. As much as I try to analyse and wrestle with a problem, I have learned that the real answers usually come when I am not focussing consciously on the issue, but make myself receptive and open.

I think you're right about being receptive. Sometimes problems are too great to handle with the conscious mind.

In looking at people who have successfully aged and those who have not, the ones who age successfully keep minds open, grow from their challenges and embrace the parts of modern life that suit their abilities. My mother in law can really frustrate me sometimes, but I don't know if I would have taken up email in my 70's or purchased an iPhone in my mid 80's, the way that she did. (I hope I would have.) In other words, she has used her life challenges-including three cancers(all unrelated) - to keep her growing and I will continue to use people like her (and you) as inspiration.

I'm so glad you keep your mind open to see the greatness around you, Alana. So many people dismiss the elderly as being irrelevant in the modern age. I hope I keep growing in the future.

Isn't aging wonderful? Yesterday while penning a post I struggled to spell a common word, "beautiful". For the life of me I couldn't remember the last two letters and had to look it up. Sad for me because I've always been a fantastic speller.
