A dog's listening ability helps school children.

Teachers at a UK school had the bright idea to bring a dog to school, thinking the children might prefer to read to pets than to adults. Reading levels have rocketed since the kids started reading stories in the classroom to furry friend Flossie.

School bosses say Flossie relaxes the kids because she is attentive but doesn’t interrupt to correct mistakes. The deputy head at Hyland School, Chelmsford, Essex, has noticed how they love reading to the dog.
Because the children are relaxed, they read more fluently.

Ten-month-old Flossie is also helping the kids with road safety on walks, and even foreign languages as they teach her commands in French and Spanish.

Dogs are the most useful animal to humans. For as long as anyone can remember dogs have been bred and used to help us in so many ways. One of their best attributes is their unconditional love.

The last dog my husband and I took into our home was a very large retired greyhound. What a wonderful companion. Our tiny flat became the gentle giant's kennel. We miss him sorely, and although many people have recommended a replacement, we wouldn't be able to care for him.

A dog can fetch and carry, hear or see for its companion, alert someone if its master is ill or dying, and provide companionship to lonely people in every society. Some dogs visit hospital wards, which cheers the patients.
Maybe it would be a better world if we all adopted a dog's attitude.

What an extraordinary idea, but I guess if it provides encouragement to children it must be good.

I wonder if the dog understands what the children are reading. I guess it doesn't matter because they're getting practice.

What a fantastic way to bring animals into the picture. I think this is such a good idea and kids really do respond so well to animals.

Children love animals. They both have the same innocence.

When my friend's husband was in a nursing home (due to a bad stroke, and subsequent cancer) my friend would bring her dog to visit. So many of the residents would respond to the dog, even the ones with memory issues. There is something in us that bonds to dogs. Why not a dog in a school? It's a great idea.

It's great to hear about personal experience with hospital visits. I've seen a dog on television going from bed to bed and the patients all respond.

A dog is such a wonderful companion. We had a lovely dog that got hit by a car years ago and died. I hadn't realized what a good companion she was for me, as I worked around our place, until she was gone. I just about couldn't stand it until we got another puppy to take her place. Maybe you need a dog, Francene, a smaller one?

A silent, furry companion is just as good as a talkative one. I guess it's the same thing for the children as they read to the dog.
