Why is is so hard for neighbors to get along?

All over the world people have the same trouble, whether it be nation against nation, Israel and Palestine for instance, or neighbors making it unpleasant for the people living next door.

Countries arm forces and intensify the problem by killing and wounding civilians. Recent events have shocked me to the core. Local peace authorities claim they informed the rival side about the location of safe areas for civilians to shelter, and those areas were bombed, killing innocent victims. I hate war.

But warfare is an escalation of mankind's basic drive to live the way they choose without interference, never considering their neighbor might be harmed by that action.

Picture
Our upstairs neighbors are moving out today, evicted after complaints lasting a year since they first moved in. Although expected, the news shocked me. Where will they go? How will the boys adapt to the setback?

The family consist of 40 year-old parents and two teenage boys who seem harmless on the surface. They're certainly not tough or unmannerly. They're skinny young men with neat haircuts and clean clothing. They cease swearing abruptly when they spot me close by. At the ages of about 15 & 17, they could be swayed either way, depending on where they end up.

Their eviction comes after repeated complaints from the neighbor living directly beneath them. At all hours of the night, they shout abuse, drink, swear, bang their own doors on purpose and slam the communal front door before yelling outside our windows.

And yet, I hear very little of this. When I lay me down to rest, I sleep. My first husband used to say it was because I have a clear conscience, but I think I'm just one of the lucky few who sleep well. I never worry over problems, and tend to accept what life throws my way. Any time I met the neighbors, they were polite and approachable.

People are so diverse. It's rare to meet anyone who thinks and acts the same way. If we can accept that we're all different, and each one of us has a right to live, we should be able to exist side-by-side. Why should we encroach on anyone else's land or home? When you think about it, nobody has a right to be in one place or another. We're all interlopers in one way or another. Settlers went to Australia and displaced the indigenous people. The same happened in America. All the people, like the Syrians, who are forced to leave their homes when war drives them out must settle somewhere.

You and I can't influence world events. However, we can have a say in what happens in our own part of the world.

How do you get along with your neighbor?

We don't get along with one set of neighbours, it's a jealously thing on their part. We got an extension and she really was not happy.

We had issues with our neighbours for quite a while when their boys were still at home, constant fighting and bad language which was louder than our television, music which made the wall shake etc. I just think some people have no respect for others unfortunately and this then leads to problems.

My neighbours on one side are lovely, we pass the time of day, they offer my kids chocolate, and I really like them. On the other side however, they are so inconsiderate. Loud, parking issues, nosey! We're still polite to each other, but I can't say I like them.
Interesting post by the way x

Francine, you raise extremely challenging matters. You can only get along with a neighbor who makes some attempt to get along with you. Let me ask you, are your downstairs neighbor bad people, because they had the upstairs family evicted? Just because YOU were not affected by their disruptive behavior, does it mean that it didn't happen? According to what is an outsider supposed to assess the situation and form an opinion - based on the superficial appearance or what really happens? People who are quick to judge don't always know what really happens. One last point - we are all very quick to form opinions based on OUR point of reference - according to OUR set of values - which may be totally contrary to someone else's. According to our set of values - slamming doors and playing loud music is unacceptable behavior. For the upstairs neighbors it is perhaps a sign of strength and power.
My 2 cents :) HUGS <3

We had the neighbours call the police once because our baby was crying and they couldn't sleep. When they were fighting so loud that we could hear every word in our apartment, we didn't retaliate. We listened for a bit to make sure no one is being physically hurt and then let them be. I think they appreciated it... they never said anything but they've been nicer ever since.

My parents didn't get along well with our neighbors. We live in a relatively conservative neighborhood, and we are expected to live in harmony with each other. As we get older, however, we seem to have become more tolerant of each other.

Francene, you have said it well. When will we learn to embrace diversity?

We get along with most of our neighbors. Everyone has their quirks. I'm sure they'd say the same about us though, right?
