What would you do if a solar flare wiped out power?

After weeks of unending hot weather in the UK, today has begun with and overcast sky, light rain and cold temperatures here in outer London. What's gone wrong?

I dug out some news which warns of catastrophic solar super-storms which could wipe out Earth's power. I wasn't hunting for it, believe me.

Apparently, scientists have given warnings about highly unusual activity on the surface of the sun which has already sent smaller solar flares spiraling towards earth.

Crisis meetings have been held to discuss how to limit the damage of solar superstorms. These occur when the sun's surface erupts, followed by the release of huge levels of plasma and magnetic energy into space. These could trigger solar storms which tear into the earths magnetic field and rip it apart. If that happens, huge surges of electrical currents will lead to widespread power outages and destroy electrical machinery. Communication systems will be crippled, vital services such as transport, sanitation and medicine will close, and loss of power will plunge the planet into darkness.

Scientists from SolarMAX gathered at the International Space University in France where they concluded advanced space-weather forecasting is the best solution. The people there say such events are inevitable. This would give around a week’s notice of where and when solar storms will take place and exactly how bad they will be. Vulnerable power lines will then be switched off, satellites re-orientated in space and planes will be grounded.

Nasa believes the world should experience a geomagnetic storm once every 150 years on average, with a 12% likelihood of one occurring in the next decade.

Scientists are calling for a network of satellites to be installed across the solar system to provide an early warning of such an event. Read more at the Daily Star.

#http://spaceweather.com/ MINOR STORM WARNING: A coronal mass ejection is heading for Earth. The cloud was hurled into space on July 30th when a magnetic filament on the sun erupted, and it appears to be on course to sideswipe Earth's magnetic field. NOAA forecasters estimate a 30% chance of polar geomagnetic storms on Aug. 2nd. That's today.

The warning from scientists will send shivers down the spine of astronomers who told of the recent Blood Moon which was said to prophesise a huge event that could strike down mankind. Daily Express.

My co-written Higher Ground futuristic series is based on a similar premise. A diary entry begins each of the four novels. Here's an excerpt from Knights in Dark Leather.

If you find this, my name is Tallulah McBride. But no--I've never been a bride. I'm twenty-one years old and I used to work in the library. That's where I obtained the materials to record the latest events. Nobody cared about what I did. They were too busy trying to get away. In panic and desperation, people smashed shop windows and stole food, equipment, clothes. Anything that could be used as a weapon or tool. After two days, we heard the whirring of a helicopter. Only one. We waved and yelled and it landed. Only three people could squeeze in with their most important belongings. There were four of us at the library.

They left me behind.

The Independent Living News says these threats are real, and we should become aware of them. Perhaps you should consider taking more steps to become self reliant.

Predictions or not, scientists take the threat seriously. What would you do if all power was lost?

I know that the possibility of this happening exists but to be honest I am too scared to think about it... I would be totally lost and the chaos would be tremendous

I haven't a clue what i would do. I guess id just try my best to live and survive. I mean what did the cavemen do? They never had any 'Power' and lived off what they knew.
Maybe revert back to those days =)

Oh, my goodness! I hope that we do not ever have to find out what we would do. I think that many of us would adapt but many of us would not. Where would we even find the "how to's" in order to know what we needed to do? No power = no internet. No Power = No access to the wisdom that would lead us to the answers! Scary thought!
