Do ghosts linger on earth?

Yesterday, a newspaper reported that a UK couple called in ghostbusters after a nightmare scenario happened in their newly-rented home.

Deeply in love, the young couple moved in together to begin their new life. However, their dream soon became a nightmare.

When a friend visited a week after their move, they all retired for the night. The young woman padded downstairs to make a cup of tea before she and her partner fell asleep. She pulled up short in the kitchen to see the state of her once tidy kitchen. A tin of beans lay on the floor and a cupboard was wide open. Wondering what had happened, she returned to her bedroom.

During the night, she woke with a start to hear banging from downstairs. She shook her partner awake. He crept downstairs to see what it was. Although furniture was moved about, the front door was locked. No one was there.

During the week, taps started running by themselves and they found a knife embedded in a door.

The friend left when the couple questioned her and then blamed each other.

The couple decided to take action, first asking their local council for a reputable exorcist, and then finding a local paranormal team on facebook.

One of the team inspected the site. He told the couple the house was built on a burial ground from centuries ago. The team member and the couple performed some actions to trap the ghost in a mirror, which they smashed, leaving the house free again. I won't repeat the postulated story of why the ghost was misbehaving. See the full Mirror story here.

How can we believe in something we can't see? Why would an unknown force cause harm? If spirits of departed people remain on the earthly plane, they must have a reason.

My mind is open. I certainly believe in an afterlife, and that our essence lives on. However, I've never seen a ghost.

About thirty years ago, my husband saw his recently dead neighbor sitting in a chair in the corner at a get-together. He's sure of what his eyes saw, yet doesn't believe in the supernatural.

Spooky stuff indeed. I'e never had any supernatural experiences and I'm not sure I believe in ghosts etc but I'm open minded as we don't know everything about how the world works yet.

I don't believe in ghosts, really, but I DO believe in spirits, and they can manifest themselves in some weird ways. Maybe some do as ghosts? I'm not sure. Fascinating either way!

Hard to believe, Francene, but like you I keep an open mind and try not to dismiss something I don't understand or can't see. There is so much in the world that is beyond what we know. We can't see magnetic fields, but we accept their existence. We can't see how the internet works - but here we are accepting it as one of the most natural things in the world. So why not ghosts??? HUGS <3

I've never seen or experienced a ghost. I lived in an apartment for almost 10 years after my mother died in the foyer and I visit my mother in law in the house where her husband died some 15 years ago. Both deaths were natural, though, which may well make a difference. In our country we had a best seller years ago called The Amityville Horror. Chilling!

I keep an open mind about ghosts, although I'm very sensitive to feeling presences and hearing them. I've never actually seen one, or maybe I have and didn't know it. I don't even know if "ghost" is the correct label??? I believe energy gets trapped and needs to be cleared or freed. Whatever the case, I'll continue to keep an open mind.
