A movie star's death brings memories.

James Garner died of natural causes in his home on Saturday at the age of 86. The US star featured in the hit TV series The Rockford Files and Maverick, and films including the 1963's iconic World War Two film The Great Escape.

The handsome actor always felt inferior to the others he worked with, claiming he didn't have the expertise. However, he won an Emmy for the role in 1977 and starred in 122 episodes of the hugely successful show from 1974 to 1980. He returned to it in the 1990s with eight Rockford Files TV movies.

In 2005 the veteran star was given a Screen Actor's Guild lifetime achievement award.

With the world on the brink of conflict in Israel and Russia, we still have the time to mourn our icons.

James Garner featured on my black-and-white television in the 60s.

My children were toddlers at the time. Now my one remaining daughter is fifty. Events like this also remind us of our own morality, mortality and of how time flies by.

We should take advantage of every day we're alive. Appreciate nature, the love of family and friends around us. Everything could be snatched away with an ill-placed bomb. I have no control over how foreign countries conduct themselves. Worrying over that problem is a waste of time.

Rather than list all the other ways life could end for each one of us, I'll recall the past with pleasure. Beehive hair-does, hot pants and mini skirts, psychedelic prints on flared trousers and tight cat-suits, coffee shops and poetry. Oh, and the peace movement. 'Make love not war'. Those were the days.

Look around you—all ye who are too young to remember that era. What will you recall from the times you are living right now?

Your so right about movies and Tv stirring up memories. James Garner and the Rockford Files was a big part of my childhood. I loved watching that series and he was great in Maverick.

U must be feeling really nostalgic. I dont belong to that era u are referring, but like u asked in your last line- what memories of my era i would remember - I was say Doordarshan

In Indian, Doordarshan is a Govt Run Television Channel. Before TV Channels were privatized only Govt Channel existed, Some really beautiful faces, episodes it has given us.

I don't know, Francene, if you noticed, but in your text you write:

"Events like this also remind us of our own MORALITY and of how time flies by."

Not sure if this is what you meant or a typo. I appreciated the added meaning, if it is :)

Mourning icons, amongst other things, is what keeps us sane and helps us get through the day.

It reminds us that no matter what is happening in your own life, no matter how difficult your own situation is, there's a whole world out there living their lives. LIFE is bigger than we are.

I haven't actually watched any of his films, but it does sounds like he was a much loved actor!

I was a tiny bit too young for Maverick, but my husband and I both watched The Rockford Files nearly every week. My husband especially loved him. As aging stars die almost daily (it seems) it does make me a bit wistful.

So sad to see him go. He was such a great actor. Thanks for posting that in his memory.
