The handsome actor always felt inferior to the others he worked with, claiming he didn't have the expertise. However, he won an Emmy for the role in 1977 and starred in 122 episodes of the hugely successful show from 1974 to 1980. He returned to it in the 1990s with eight Rockford Files TV movies.
In 2005 the veteran star was given a Screen Actor's Guild lifetime achievement award.

We should take advantage of every day we're alive. Appreciate nature, the love of family and friends around us. Everything could be snatched away with an ill-placed bomb. I have no control over how foreign countries conduct themselves. Worrying over that problem is a waste of time.
Rather than list all the other ways life could end for each one of us, I'll recall the past with pleasure. Beehive hair-does, hot pants and mini skirts, psychedelic prints on flared trousers and tight cat-suits, coffee shops and poetry. Oh, and the peace movement. 'Make love not war'. Those were the days.
